It is&nbsp; aimed at&nbsp; a&nbsp; rural environment&nbsp; with&nbsp; traditional and self-constructed buildings. The volume’s facade responds and adapts to the traditional residences, which are located in the wider area. It is an effort to project a traditional form in a contemporary fashion. Its height corresponds to the normal height of a typical residence. The residence is organized in two parts. The first part consists of all the public uses, functions of a private character are sited on the &nbsp; second part of the house. Among these parts, there are two semi-outdoor spaces, which make this separation spatial .They create the possibility of seclusion and reinforce the sense of privacy of the second part of the house.&nbsp; Except from these spaces, there are two more semi-outdoor spaces, one of them is designed for the entrance, while the other is sited after the private rooms. The apartment block in Sheepshead Bay is distinguished by a simple profile and generously proportioned windows, private balconies and entrance doors. The design is abstracted version of typical Brooklyn housing typologies. &nbsp; It contains five residences spread over three floors and a daycare center on the ground floor. At the basement, a small private gym, a laundry room and storage are placed.&nbsp; The second and the third floor consist of one- and two- bedroom apartments, each with small outdoor spaces. The private penthouse on the fourth floor is marked by an inward set back of the façade, creating a private outdoor terrace. Additionally, the back-yard of the plot is designed as a playground and a vegetable garden for the daycare center. The elevations were developed as a contemporary interpretation of the local vernacular, comprising of a varied array of openings set on a grid, allowing different views at each floor. The typology of this “informal” edifice follows the Dom-ino prototype with an additional balcony that runs across the perimeter of the building on each level. In order to avoid any sense of levels’ separation, the majority of the openings on each elevation are reformed without being aligned and complemented by the interior’s arrangement. The absolute subtraction of the balconies erases the existing spatial extension and division of the first and second level as well as of the terrace. The function and the use of the former balcony are reinterpreted in new forms on both levels of the building. The ground floor gets elevated less than one meter from the ground, with slightly detached solid platforms and stairs, while on the upper level, a part of the initial interior space is sacrificed in order to embody an intermediate exterior space. The small plots and the ground’s incline both resulted in the double or single storey buildings, dating back to late 19th and early 20th century, being much simpler compared to the lower city’s neoclassical ones. The new house arrangement is formed in analogy to its neighboring buildings, while it recedes by two metres from the urban front, aiming to create a ‘scene’ where characteristic elements of neoclassical buildings are projected in a contemporary way. The reinterpretation of the old buildings’ main elements, has as result the openings functioning as ‘frames’, transforming the interior to semi-outdoors space. The entrance framework is multiplied forming, along with the steps a dynamic reception area, with indirect references to neoclassical standards. The disproportionate plot depth creates ideal conditions for the formation of an interior open court for sunlight and ventilation, which amplifies the relationship between internal and external spaces. The typical domestic unit in Acoli is three-storey building, following the Dom-ino prototype, very often with an inclinated roof covered with ceramic tiles. Main attribute of these residencies is that they start from a central structure and then expand with structural additions outwardly in order to support any new function of the house.&nbsp; The proposal introduces the reverse process as it tries to detect all the necessary domestic functions and embody them from the beginning in a self-sufficient and independent volume. Each additional element of the typical suburban Greek house (balconies, roofs, and yards) is reinterpreted and then incorporated in the initial building.&nbsp; All the programmatic uses of the house are separated both vertically and horizontally, according to the degree of privacy needed and the frequency of daily use. The harsh, yet beautiful landscape was the key element in the design process of the project and the pursuit of its form. Through a series of sections, the project came to be developed attuned to the nature, rather standing in opposition to it. Thus, a hotel complex was created, mostly embodied in the ground, forming a direct connection with the territory and its textures. Communal spaces in the form of plateaus both divide and unify the accommodation units, enabling the transition from isolated spaces to those of a socialization environment. At the same time, public and private spaces are developed inversely with the building’s articulation on the topography. Upper concern for the design of the building was its presence in relation to the image of the city. Here, the structural system possesses an inherent order that is further reproduced and leads gradually to its transformation into an ornament element. Free from any purely structural function, the order of the façade becomes an ornament and gives a sense of proportion, measure and beauty that also ensures the acceptable integration of the building in the public interface. The challenge is to unify the new building with the image of the city, retaining coherence. Through the arrangement of the elevations, both private and public aspects are mediated and thus the private space becomes a fundamental element of the public space. The main façade is vertically composed and differentiated by three different orders, one for each level. Determinant factor for this decision was the fact that Cycladic architecture is durable through time and sustainable in extreme weather conditions due to its technical characteristics and the simplicity of the construction. Main feature of Cycladic architecture is that the various private buildings that constitute the Cycladic settlements, are not perceived as different constructions by the visitor but as a unified construct. Whr’s structure also follows this principle, formulating a volume where every private unit is an integrated part of the whole residential unit. A multitude of typologies of Cycladic openings (doors, windows) are firstly projected and then subtract the main façade, thus creating a transparent “skin” that ensures the proper insolation, ventilation and unobstructed view of the residential units. Hotel resorts cover the largest part of the coastline, significantly corrupting the ecosystem and the landscape while promoting a generic style of all-inclusive vacation resorts. In our case, the challenge was to creatively reuse one of these hotel units, aiming to its adaption to the scale of the visitor and the human activities. The humanization of this impersonal and strictly structured edifice materialized through two interventions∙ the addition of a canopy and the re-configuration of the main elevations. Both interventions have a mild impact upon the preexisting edifice. A visual reduction of the building’s volume is achieved through the addition of a canopy.
